Barkas B1000 KB full restoration including bodywork and technology
This 1974 Barkas B1000 KB is currently in our workshops. Following the completion of a previous Barkas project, the owner has now commissioned us with this complete restoration as well. The project differs deliberately from the first vehicle: the goal is not simply to return it to its original delivery condition, but rather a thorough rebuild with technical and visual modifications tailored to the vehicle's intended use.
We begin by assessing the body structure. On a Barkas B1000 KB, the load-bearing frame areas, floor sections, wheel arches, door sills, and the transitions between the body and substructure are particularly important. Many of these East German commercial vehicles saw decades of heavy daily use. Therefore, we check not only for visible rust, but also for material fatigue, old repairs, and weakened connection points.
Barkas B1000 KB: Clarify the existing structure before considering modifications
With the Barkas B1000 KB, the first question is what the body can still support and which areas need to be rebuilt. Individual modifications only make sense if the basic structure is sound. A beautiful interior or new technology is of little use if the sills, frame sections, or floor areas are not load-bearing.
In our workshops, we therefore first expose and document the critical areas. Corroded or poorly repaired sections are not covered up. Damaged sheet metal is cut out, new parts are fitted and welded in such a way that the structure again forms a stable base for painting, technical components, and subsequent assembly.
Frame areas, wheel arches and floor structure of the B1000
The Barkas B1000, as a cab-over-engine commercial vehicle, has a different construction than a conventional passenger car. In this type of vehicle, the interior, entry points, side walls, floor structure, and mounting points play a crucial role. Especially in vehicles that have been used for extended periods as minibuses or vans, damage often becomes apparent in areas that only become truly visible after disassembly.
We inspect wheel arches, door bottoms, sill areas, floor panels, mounting points, and transitions to the underbody. Where ready-made repair panels are not readily available, panels must be fabricated according to a sample. The crucial point is not to close the area as quickly as possible, but to build a sound and dimensionally accurate body shell.
Two-stroke technology and planned modifications
The Barkas B1000 uses the familiar water-cooled, three-cylinder, two-stroke engine with front-wheel drive. For this restoration, the general model history is less important than the condition of the existing components. Engine, transmission, cooling system, fuel supply, brakes, chassis, and electrical system will be inspected according to their condition.
An engine overhaul or technical restoration is planned where wear, leaks, or previous modifications necessitate it. Since this project allows for individual customization, originality, everyday usability, and technical reliability must be carefully balanced. Crucially, the Barkas must not only look finished but also function reliably.

Before starting any Barkas B1000, B1000 KB, or other East German commercial vehicle, a thorough inspection of its condition is essential. Particular attention should be paid to the bodywork, frame, underbody, doors, wheel arches, mechanical components, parts availability, and the intended future use.
