Bodywork inspection and equipment check prior to the BMW 3.0 CSi restoration
With our assistance, the owner found this BMW 3.0 CSi in the Netherlands. The coupé dates from 1975 and features a combination that is not typical for an E9: an electric steel sunroof, electrically operated windows, a manual gearbox, and an M30 fuel-injected engine.
Before starting any restoration, a thorough assessment is essential. With the BMW E9, the condition of the bodywork determines the actual scope of the work – not the options list. A BMW 3.0 CSi with a sunroof, electric windows, and fuel injection might seem attractive at first glance. However, for the restoration, the most important factor is the actual condition of the sills, roof area, plenum chamber, strut towers, and floor structure.
The sunroof makes this finding even more significant. The sunroof frames of the E9 were installed by Karmann without adequate rust protection; foam was used between the roof skin and the frame at the factory, which traps moisture instead of allowing it to drain away. In addition, the drain hoses are problematic: if clogged or incorrectly positioned, they drain directly into the sills. These are the areas where a BMW E9 Coupé with a sunroof requires particular attention.
For planning purposes, sills, water boxes, floor panels, strut towers, wheel arches, doors, window frames, and previous repairs are individually assessed. Only when this bodywork assessment is complete can it be determined where exactly bodywork, rust removal, and mechanical overhaul should begin.
BMW E9 Coupé with fuel-injected engine and manual transmission
The M30 inline six-cylinder engine with fuel injection clearly distinguishes the 3.0 CSi from the carburetor-equipped 3.0 CS variant. A manual transmission is standard equipment on this vehicle – a combination that is currently more popular with E9 buyers than an automatic transmission.
The sunroof and electric windows each have their own specific inspection points. Window regulators, door seals, sunroof motor, switches, and wiring must function reliably. Hidden water damage or corroded wiring often only becomes apparent after exposure. Therefore, on a BMW E9 with an electric steel sunroof, it's not enough to simply check if the roof moves. It's crucial to examine what's happening beneath the frame, seals, drains, and interior trim.
The Karmann bodywork also requires separate consideration. The E9 is an elegant coupé, but not a car where rust only forms on highly visible exterior edges. Many critical areas are hidden. Therefore, the equipment and technical features can only be meaningfully assessed once the load-bearing structure has been properly examined.
Bodywork, rust removal and technical inspection on the E9
Sills and strut towers are a common problem area on the BMW E9. Since the coupe lacks a B-pillar, the side sills contribute significantly to torsional rigidity. Rusted-through inner sills – often hidden behind intact outer sheet metal – are not uncommon on the E9. This is precisely why a BMW E9 restoration cannot be seriously planned without a thorough inspection of the sills.
In our workshops, we first uncover what lies beneath the paint, underbody protection, or old repairs. Seam sealing, cavity protection, sunroof drains, corrosion protection, and paint preparation are all closely intertwined on the E9. Sunroof rust, leaking drains, weakened strut towers, or poor-quality repair panels can significantly alter the scope of work.
The M30 six-cylinder engine, fuel injection system, brakes, suspension, and electrical system are assessed based on the condition of the body. With a 1975 BMW 3.0 CSi, the technology and bodywork are inextricably linked: a powerful engine and attractive features are of little use if the sills, plenum chamber, or strut towers are not structurally sound.
