Shiny surface, poor substance

This 1973 BMW E9 3.0 CS came to us from Germany. At first glance, the car appeared attractively restored. That was precisely the problem. The seller had cosmetically enhanced the classic car to achieve a price that didn't reflect its true condition. After disassembly, we discovered a set of issues we are unfortunately all too familiar with in E9 coupes: rusted-through sills, damaged A-pillars, sagging doors, rusted-through strut towers, front-end damage, rear-end damage, and other typical rust areas.

An E9 can look fantastic in photos. However, the long hood, the flat roofline, and the slim pillars don't hide what's happening beneath the paint, filler, and sealant. Anyone buying such a BMW should know where to look before even inspecting it.

E9 body with known weaknesses

The BMW E9 was built from 1968 to 1975, and the 3.0 CS is one of the sought-after variants with the M30 inline six-cylinder engine. This particular vehicle has an automatic transmission. Technically, the M30 is a robust engine, but when restoring an E9, the bodywork is usually the first priority. The engine is rarely the most expensive issue.

On the E9, it's not just the outer panels that rust. Critical areas include the sills, A-pillars, strut towers, wheel arches, floor areas, front grille, rear end, window frames, and the transitions of the internal structure. If the sills and A-pillars are rusted through, the doors won't sag by chance. At that point, the body is already deviating from its original geometry.

The damage to this car was so extensive that the planned work could not result in any cosmetic improvements. Previous repairs and preparations for sale had to be reversed before it was even clear which areas of the sheet metal remained structurally sound.

Front damage, rear damage and sagging doors

Front and rear damage is particularly problematic on the E9 because it quickly affects the fit and finish of the entire body. Hoods, doors, fenders, bumpers, trim strips, and window areas are all susceptible to even a few millimeters of misalignment. A sagging door panel can be caused by worn hinges. Rusted-through A-pillars and sills are usually a sign of structural damage.

When you uncover such vehicles, the difference between repair and mere concealment becomes clear. Body filler smooths a surface, but it doesn't replace a rocker panel. Paint doesn't seal a strut tower. When swollen seams, old overlaps, and thinned edges appear beneath a clean exterior, the purchase price is only part of the problem.

The BMW E9 underwent a complete restoration in the workshops in the Czech Republic. The work included bodywork, paint, mechanical components, interior, chassis, brakes, electrics, and final assembly. The car was completely repainted and finished after the restoration was completed.

Full restoration despite difficult starting conditions

The BMW E9 3.0 CS is fundamentally worth restoring. Good coupes are in demand, the design is distinctive, and the six-cylinder engine is one of the larger BMW engines of that era. Nevertheless, the math remains harsh: A showy example with typical E9 damage might seem like a bargain at first glance, but end up being significantly more expensive than an honest, less well-preserved car.

The repeated advice remains crucial: Before buying a classic car, do your research, check for typical weak points, and don't rely on shiny chrome or fresh paint. Especially with the E9, a thorough inspection will not only save you trouble but also a lot of money.

Despite its poor initial condition, this BMW 3.0 CS was completely restored. Ultimately, the car received a valuation report in Germany with a grade of 1.5. This doesn't change the condition it was in at the time of purchase, but it demonstrates what's possible when the work doesn't start with the surface, but rather with the sills, A-pillars, and strut towers.
