Bodywork and restoration – what a West Coast import really hid

At first glance, this Jaguar E-Type Series 3 lived up to its promise. It came to us from the USA, via Cologne – supposedly as a well-preserved West Coast classic car. The West Coast is considered by many buyers to be an affordable place for classic cars: drier climate, hardly any road salt. This impression is often more misleading than one might expect.

Rust was everywhere imaginable, systematically concealed with filler and bitumen. What looked like a well-maintained US import from the outside revealed a different picture upon closer inspection. Fenders, sills, floor panels, interior areas, seams, and transitions all followed the same pattern: corrosion underneath, temporarily hidden.

In addition, there were some clearly egregious repairs. The gearbox cover had been cut open and the resulting hole glued shut with aluminum sheeting – apparently a way to carry out a gearbox repair without properly removing or opening it. And then there was the wrong engine block: not the original unit, but a replacement of unclear origin and unknown condition.

These were not the only irregularities. The inventory revealed further points that confirm what buyers of US imports should know: "Well preserved West Coast car" is a description that often needs to be reassessed upon closer inspection.

For this project, that meant: stripping everything down, evaluating everything individually. Bodywork, mechanics, engine, and transmission are assessed separately before rust removal, painting, and final assembly can be sensibly planned. In such a case, a Jaguar E-Type restoration doesn't begin with paint or leather, but with an honest examination of the car's structure.

V12 engine, widebody kit and monocoque chassis – the Series 3 E-Type

The defining feature of the Series 3: A 5.3-liter V12 replaced the previous six-cylinder engine from 1971 onwards. At the same time, the track was widened and the fenders were flared – visible differences compared to the narrower earlier series. As a result, a Jaguar E-Type V12 appears wider, more composed, and technically different from the earlier Series 1 and Series 2 cars.

The self-supporting monocoque body makes rust repair on the E-Type more complex than on ladder-frame vehicles. Sills, floor panels, inner fenders, A-pillars, and load-bearing joints are structural components, not just the outer skin. Especially with a Jaguar E-Type Series 3 from the USA, which may have a different exhaust system, different bumpers, and potentially modified components, the technical assessment requires particular care.

This car wasn't just about a poor paint job. Body filler, bitumen, old repair panels, and hidden welds first had to be removed to determine which parts of the body were still structurally sound. With an E-Type, this phase determines whether the subsequent restoration can be planned effectively or if new damage will constantly occur.

Rust removal, bodywork and engine troubleshooting based on findings

In our workshops, each sheet of metal is exposed and assessed. Fenders, sills, floor panels, interior areas, seams, front end, and rear end are rebuilt according to the findings. Straightening work, seam sealing, cavity protection, and corrosion protection follow the sequence of the assessment – ​​not a fixed plan.

The open question of the engine block must be resolved before any further technical work: its origin, condition, and consistency with the vehicle documents and project documentation. In the case of a Jaguar E-Type V12, an incorrect or unidentified engine block can significantly impact the value, subsequent registration, and technical planning. Only after this clarification can a decision be made as to whether an engine overhaul, partial rebuild, or replacement is the most sensible option.

The gearbox also requires a complete inspection after the aluminum work. If a housing area or cover has been modified in the past, not only is the repair itself questionable, but also the cause. The braking system, chassis, interior, electrical system, fuel system, and cooling system will be addressed after the bodywork and the technical inventory.

Jaguar E-Type restoration – even for US imports with hidden defects

Anyone wanting to restore a Jaguar E-Type – Series 1, Series 2, or Series 3 – should, especially with US imports, first look beneath the surface. Pictures of fenders, sills, floor panels, engine compartment, gearbox, interior, underbody, and old repairs often reveal more quickly than the seller's description what lies beneath the paint, filler, and bitumen.

In our workshops in the Czech Republic, we examine what is truly present and what has merely been concealed. Bodywork, rust removal, engine inspection, gearbox testing, painting, and final assembly of a Jaguar E-Type can only be meaningfully planned if the vehicle's structure, technology, and documentation are all consistent.
