A project that was barely allowed to begin
This beautiful Mercedes-Benz 190 SL came to us from the Hamburg area. It was a US import that we were going to restore. The W121 is one of the most famous open-top Mercedes classics of the 1950s and early 1960s. That's precisely why we were so excited about this project.
But sometimes a restoration ends before it really begins.
Emigration instead of the start of restoration
When we started the initial work on the 190 SL, it was practically already over. The owner informed us that he and his family were emigrating to Spain and selling his classic car collection.
The project was thus abandoned. Not because of the car's condition, not because of technical problems, and not because of a cost explosion, but for the owner's personal reasons. The car thus remained one of those projects that one would have liked to undertake, but which never actually reached the workshop stage.
Mercedes 190 SL as a restoration basis
The Mercedes 190 SL is not a simple roadster. Bodywork, chrome, interior, soft top, panel gaps, and US-specific details all require meticulous care during restoration. Especially with imported vehicles, the condition, modifications, completeness, and documentation must be thoroughly inspected.
In this case, it remained at the preparation stage and was abandoned early. A pity, because this 190 SL could have been an interesting project.
Sometimes the story of a classic car is not the restoration itself, but the moment when it becomes clear that it will not take place.
