This Mercedes G W461 290 GD came to us in the Czech Republic from the Regensburg area. Originally, this off-road vehicle with its 2.9-liter diesel engine was in Great Britain. That's why it's a right-hand drive vehicle.
Before its delivery, the car had already undergone an attempted restoration in Germany. Unfortunately, not all the work was carried out properly. Some parts were also lost, which significantly complicated the subsequent reconstruction.
The goal of the Mercedes G-Class restoration is to bring the W461 back to its original condition as closely as possible. Once the work is complete, the vehicle should not only be displayed and look good, but also be used reliably. Its use for hunting is also planned.
That's precisely why a cosmetic restoration isn't enough. The Mercedes G-Class frame, body, mechanical components, interior, and any missing parts must first be sorted, inspected, and sensibly reassembled. In a project that's already underway, it's especially important to know what's actually there and what was lost during the previous disassembly.

Bodywork, rust removal and technology on the 290 GD
With the Mercedes G, the condition of the vehicle is paramount. Frame supports, body mounts, underbody, sills, wheel arches, doors, door bottoms, and window frames must be exposed and inspected. Previous repairs complicate this work because it's not always immediately clear what is structurally sound and what has merely been covered up.
In our workshops, the affected areas are repaired according to the findings. Mercedes G-Class rust on frame brackets, window frames, door bottoms, or underbody is not just treated cosmetically. Rust removal, corrosion protection, cavity protection, seam sealing, underbody protection, and inspection of the frame brackets are all part of this project. The goal is for the G-Class to not only be painted but also remain capable of handling off-road conditions.
The technical aspects are also thoroughly inspected. Engine, transmission, transfer case, axles, brakes, steering, cooling system, fuel system, and electrical system must all be suitable for their intended use. For the Mercedes 290 GD, shifting, all-wheel drive functionality, differential locks, seals, bearings, and electrical connections are more important than any cosmetic detail.
The missing parts create additional work. While many parts are generally available for a Mercedes G-Class, individual interior, steering, and mounting components for the right-hand drive W461 can be time-consuming. A comprehensive parts list is crucial here to ensure that the assembly process remains predictable or is repeatedly interrupted.
