This 1976 Morgan Plus 8 was already the second classic car from the same collector to visit our workshops. Such follow-up projects are always a good sign for us, because the initial collaboration has clearly established trust. With the Morgan, it wasn't about a quick cosmetic refresh, but rather a thorough restoration with a clear assessment of the car's condition.

From the outset, it was noticeable that some details didn't appear as uniform as one would expect from large-scale manufacturers. Morgan produced cars in small numbers, with a strong emphasis on craftsmanship and using components that could vary depending on the year of manufacture, market, and availability. A Morgan Plus 8 from the 1970s, in particular, therefore requires careful contextualization.

The important thing wasn't to immediately label every differing part as incorrect. What mattered was what fit the vehicle's history, what was technically sound, and what needed to be corrected during the rebuild. This applied to the body, interior, electrics, fittings, chassis, and the technology surrounding the Rover V8 engine.

The Morgan Plus 8 was built from 1968 onwards and combined classic Morgan construction methods with the Rover V8 engine. A 1976 vehicle belongs to the early Plus 8 years, when details could depend more heavily on the specific model, the market, and parts availability than with larger production models.

Restoring a Morgan Plus 8 involves more than just the engine. The steel chassis, ash wood frame, aluminum body, doors, fenders, hoods, interior, and mounting points all need to be considered together. Any previous work on any of these areas can affect fit, stability, and subsequent assembly.

The Plus 8 appears simple, but it's not a simple British roadster. The combination of wood, steel, aluminum, and V8 technology demands a careful approach during disassembly and reassembly. Parts fitted too quickly often lead to poor fit later on, particularly on doors, hoods, fenders, or the soft top.

With this classic Morgan, the focus was on the chassis, wood structure, and body fit from the very beginning. Rust on the steel chassis, soft wood, poorly fitting doors, damaged fender mountings, and old repairs can cause significantly more work on a Plus 8 than one might initially expect.

In our workshops, these areas are exposed, sorted, and rebuilt according to the findings. Corrosion protection, wood frame restoration, chassis work, paint preparation, convertible top connections, and interior parts must all be compatible with the vehicle. Especially with Morgans, meticulous preparation is crucial for ensuring the roadster sits level and that the doors, hood, and convertible top close properly.

The technical aspects also require a clear approach. The Rover V8 engine, cooling system, fuel system, gearbox, brakes, steering, electrics, and chassis are not considered in isolation. With a vehicle from the 1970s, it is particularly important to determine whether previous repairs were merely functional or truly well executed.

This Morgan clearly demonstrates why a Plus 8 shouldn't be judged solely on its paint, leather, and engine before restoration. The chassis, wooden frame, body fit, mechanical condition, and the availability of original parts all determine the actual work required.

Especially with a handcrafted vehicle, even a small deviation can have major consequences later on. If the ash wood frame isn't properly fitted, the steel chassis is weakened, or the aluminum skin was mounted under tension, this will later become apparent in panel gaps, convertible top connections, paint cracks, or doors that don't close properly.
