Porsche 356 C Cabriolet full restoration from Austria
This Porsche 356 C Cabriolet from Austria is currently in our workshops. Following a change of ownership, the already commissioned full restoration was continued. We have been working on the body repairs since the beginning of 2025. With an open-top 356, the focus is initially on the structure: sills, door fits, front and rear sections, as well as the soft-top connections, must be thoroughly inspected.
The goal is a professional restoration of the body and mechanics according to the original model specifications. Crucial to this is not only the subsequent paintwork, but also a sound convertible body with correct panel gaps, properly fitting convertible top attachment points, and verifiable evidence of repaired components.
Porsche 356 C Cabriolet: check the open body first
The history of the Porsche 356 C Cabriolet is quickly told: it represents the final development stage of the 356 series, featuring, among other things, disc brakes on all four wheels. However, for this restoration, the more important question is how structurally sound the open-top body still is and what work will be necessary before painting.
A convertible is less forgiving of inaccurate bodywork than a coupé. If the sills, floor areas, or door joints are not correctly aligned, the doors, window frames, and soft top will not fit together properly later. Therefore, we carefully inspect the structure before proceeding with any further work and determine which areas need to be preserved, straightened, or rebuilt.
Sills, door fit and convertible top connections on the 356 C
On this Porsche 356 C Cabriolet, the bodywork focuses on the sills, floor sections, door gaps, front and rear areas, and the attachment points for the convertible top mechanism. The convertible top connections, in particular, must be dimensionally accurate, as they later determine the fit, tension, and watertightness of the top.
In our workshops, old or substandard repairs aren't simply reworked. Damaged areas are exposed, thoroughly assessed, and, if necessary, cut out. New sheet metal parts are fitted and welded in such a way that the body is once again stable and prepared for painting, final assembly, and convertible top installation.
Air-cooled boxer engine, braking system and chassis
Besides the bodywork, the mechanical components are also part of a complete restoration. The Porsche 356 C uses air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engines, either as the 1600 C or SC, depending on the version. The specific work required on the engine, carburetors, cooling system, transmission, brakes, and suspension depends on the individual condition of each vehicle.
An engine overhaul isn't priced as a fixed cost, but planned according to the vehicle's condition. It's crucial that the technology is compatible with the later 356 C models and that no arbitrary modernizations alter the car's character. Anything that can be preserved in its original state and professionally refurbished is retained. Worn or technically unsafe components are repaired or replaced.
