Why aren't there more collectors of French vintage cars? Is it the language? Or maybe the extremely poor supply of parts? This wonderful example of the French automobile industry of the 1970s came to us from Berlin. A complete restoration with the exception of the engine and transmission was on the agenda.

Encyclopedia

The Renault R15 and R17 were compact sports coupes produced by the French car manufacturer Renault in the 1970s. These two models were introduced in 1971 and remained in the range until 1979. Known for their unique blend of sporty design and everyday usability, they shared many technical components but differed in design and equipment.

The Renault R15 was the simpler of the two models and was aimed at customers who wanted a sporty car with practical features. It featured a sleek, two-door coupe design with a relatively conventional rear end. Inside, the R15 could seat four people and was fitted with simple but comfortable interiors.

In contrast, the Renault R17 was the more upmarket and sporty model. It differed from the R15 in its more distinctive front end, which often featured additional headlights and a striking grille. The R17 was also available in a version with a Targa roof, which made it particularly attractive to convertible enthusiasts. Inside, the R17 offered higher-quality equipment, including more comfortable seats and more extensive instrumentation.

Both models were powered by four-cylinder engines, with the R17 offering more powerful engines and better performance. The engines were efficient and reliable for their time, and both cars offered a good balance of performance and fuel efficiency.

Renault's R15 and R17 were known for their good roadholding and responsive handling, combining the practicality of a daily car with the fun and aesthetics of a sports coupe, which made them popular in Europe and other markets.

Today, the Renault R15 and R17 are treasured classics that reflect the automotive design and culture of the 1970s. Their combination of unique style, driving pleasure and practicality makes them interesting examples in the history of the French automotive industry.
