A Tatra with a family history
This Tatra 52 arrived at our workshop in 2026. We expect to begin the actual full restoration in 2027. It is a 1934 sedan, completely preserved, in its original black color, and has been in the same Czech family for three generations.
That's what makes this project special. The car isn't just any pre-war vehicle that somehow found its way into a collection. It has a clear, traceable history. For the family, the Tatra is more than just an old car. It's a piece of their own past. That's precisely why the restoration must be approached calmly, carefully, and with respect for the existing structure.
Tatra 52 from Kopřivnice, formerly Nesselsdorf
The Tatra 52 is one of the unique designs from Kopřivnice, formerly Nesselsdorf. The Tatra brand often pursued its own technical path. This car, too, does not simply follow the typical design of many pre-war European automobiles. A central tube frame, swing axles, and an air-cooled four-cylinder boxer engine characterize its construction.
The engine is there and turns over. That's good news, but it's not a guarantee of safety. With a pre-war Tatra, it's not enough to simply run the engine briefly and draw conclusions about its condition. Before it can be started up again, the lubrication, bearings, cylinders, valve train, cooling system, fuel system, and ignition must all be carefully inspected.
Complete, but not yet disassembled
The Tatra arrived complete. No parts are currently known to be missing. This is a significant advantage for a vehicle of this age. Especially with a Tatra 52, missing details are not easy to replace. Instruments, fittings, lamps, handles, interior parts, chassis components, or small body parts often have to be sourced, refurbished, or remanufactured from scratch.
Despite the favorable starting point, the restoration doesn't begin with dismantling at any cost. First, the condition, completeness, and originality are documented. With a car owned by a family for three generations, it's crucial to determine what is truly original and what has been altered, repaired, or modified over the decades.
Wood, sheet metal and central tube frame
During the planned Tatra 52 restoration, the bodywork will be examined very closely. The sedan features a classic combination of a wooden frame and sheet metal body. Whether and to what extent the wooden frame is damaged will only become apparent during the detailed examination. For this very reason, nothing can be said beforehand that has not yet been revealed.
The inspection includes door hinges, wooden frames, floor areas, sheet metal edges, sills, fastening points, and transitions between wood and sheet metal. Warped, rotten, or previously poorly repaired wood affects doors, hoods, panel gaps, and the alignment of the sheet metal. For a classic car with a wooden frame, this work determines the entire subsequent restoration.
No restoration based on a parts catalog
Unlike many post-war vehicles, the Tatra 52 doesn't have a readily available parts supply. Ready-made repair panels, complete interior kits, or new technical components are rarely available on a regular basis. Anything that can be salvaged must be preserved and refurbished. Anything that is no longer technically sound must be repaired or remanufactured based on existing parts.
The planned complete restoration includes bodywork, woodwork, paint, engine, transmission, chassis, brakes, electrics, interior, chrome and trim parts, and final assembly. The original black paint will be restored. This suits this car because the Tatra doesn't need flashy effects to impress. Its appeal comes from its form, technology, and history.
Starting in 2027 with a clear direction
The Tatra 52 is now awaiting the start of the actual restoration work. The complete restoration is scheduled to begin in 2027. Until then, preparation is the priority: documenting, inspecting, identifying parts, understanding the condition, and avoiding hasty decisions.
This Tatra isn't a quick project. It's a pre-war Czech car with a central tube frame, swing axles, an air-cooled boxer engine, and a family history spanning three generations. It's precisely this combination that makes it valuable—not just as a vehicle, but as a preserved piece of history.
