Triumph TR3A rebuild and bodywork restoration from Austria
This Triumph TR3A from the greater Vienna area has been in our workshops since the beginning of 2025. The vehicle has an unusual history. It has belonged to the owner's family for decades, was lost for a long time after an attempted restoration in Hungary, and could only be returned after being seized by the police.
The complete rebuild of the British roadster is now underway. The focus is on the body, chassis, and the correct reassembly of all components after its long period of inactivity. Unlike a typical restoration project, this one involves not only rust removal and mechanical work, but also order, completeness, and a comprehensible rebuild following a difficult history.
TR3A from Vienna: Reconstruction after a long interruption
The restoration of this Triumph TR3A isn't starting from scratch, but neither is it based on clear documentation. Previous work, missing parts attributions, and the long period of inactivity necessitate a thorough inventory. We're checking which parts are present, which assemblies belong together, and where previous modifications affect the subsequent rebuild.
Especially with a disassembled or incompletely prepared roadster, doors, fenders, hoods, sills, and body joints must be inspected together early on. Otherwise, incorrect gaps, tension, or problems during final assembly will occur later.
Frame, sills and floor panels of the Triumph TR3A
The Triumph TR3A has a separate frame construction with a body mounted on top. Therefore, the condition of the frame, sills, floor panels, A-pillars, fender connections, and door fits are crucial for restoration. In open roadsters, the underbody provides a significant portion of the structural stability.
In our workshops, we first check whether the frame is straight, load-bearing, and free of critical corrosion. Then, damaged body areas are exposed. Rust on the floor, sills, or lower fenders is not covered up, but rather cut out and repaired with custom-made or original repair panels.
Door lines, fenders and bodywork before painting
With the TR3A, the order of work is crucial to the result. The bodywork must be inspected with the doors, fenders, and hoods installed before painting. This is the only way to properly assess panel gaps, door lines, and transitions.
This project differs from the previous TR3 project: Here, the focus is less on the pure structural inspection of a delivered vehicle, but rather on the orderly rebuild after a long, interrupted restoration history. Therefore, every step in the bodywork process must be compatible with the available parts and the frame.
Technology, chassis and Austrian registration
The Triumph TR3A was built with a robust inline four-cylinder engine, SU carburetors, and front disc brakes. This technical description is sufficient for this project. More important is the actual condition of the engine, gearbox, axles, brakes, steering, and electrical system after its long period of inactivity.
The technical restoration is carried out according to the findings. Worn, missing, or incorrectly installed components are inspected and repaired. The goal is a reliable roadster that is technically sound and can later be sensibly prepared for historic vehicle registration and roadworthiness certification in Austria.
