Volkswagen VW Karmann Ghia TC145, 1974

Germany

This rare Brazilian Karmann Ghia came to our workshop from the Paderborn area. The work on this vehicle reached a scale that we could not have imagined even in our wildest dreams at the beginning of the project. Before the paint was stripped, large amounts of filler work could be seen in many places on the body. But even after the paint was stripped, the total work involved was still impossible to estimate. Hundreds - and we are not exaggerating - of holes, rust holes, dents and places that had been repaired in some way over the past few decades littered the body and chassis.

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia TC145, a lesser-known but notable vehicle from the Karmann Ghia range, was produced in the 1970s. This model, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, represented a stylistic departure from the classic Karmann Ghia designs of the 1950s and 1960s. The TC145 was manufactured in Brazil, making it a unique chapter in Volkswagen's history.

The Karmann Ghia TC (Touring Coupé) 145, introduced in 1970, offered a more modern and angular design language compared to its predecessors. The TC145 had a noticeably more angular body that brought with it a touch of Italian design and elegance. The smooth lines and the harmonious integration of headlights and grille gave the vehicle a modern and appealing look.

Under the hood, the Karmann Ghia TC145 was fitted with an air-cooled flat-four engine, as found in many Volkswagen models of the era. The engines were available in a range of sizes, with the most common variant being a 1.6-litre unit. This engine provided adequate performance and reliability, suitable for everyday use and occasional longer journeys.

The interior of the TC145 was functional and comfortable, with a focus on practicality and usability. The equipment was typical of Volkswagen vehicles of the period, with a simple but effective layout of instruments and controls.

The Karmann Ghia TC145 was primarily intended for the South American market and was produced there until the mid-1970s. Due to its limited production volume and regional availability, the TC145 remains a relatively unknown model in global automotive history.

Today, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia TC145 is an interesting collector's item that offers insight into the regional variations of Volkswagen's automobile production. With its unique design and history, the TC145 represents a fascinating facet of Volkswagen and Karmann Ghia history.
